Images of Organisations example: Using these images to de-brief/review an online activity

Using the ‘Images of Organisations’ cards to de-brief/review an activity

13th February 2023

It can be very effective to use these cards to review an experiential learning task that a team has undertaken. Rather than asking questions such as “What did we do well?” or “How did you feel?” in order to draw learning from the task, ask participants to work with the cards.

  • Suggestion 1: Ask the participants to select images that represent the different feelings they experienced during the task and put them in order.
For example, if they began the task feeling confused and unclear about what they were doing they may choose the image below:
    Route Choice
  • They may then have experienced tension and conflict as they all attempted to have their own ideas and suggestions adopted and so they choose the image below:
    Tug of War
  •  Later in the project they may have felt that the task was being achieved but that people were unhappy with their roles. They might, therefore, choose the image below:
    Cogs in a Machine

Ask participants to choose cards to represent all the stages in the task. They can do this individually (in which case you can compare
and contrast their experiences) or together (in which case they will have different opinions and a lively dialogue will follow).
Once the cards have been selected ask,
“What was it that caused the feelings you experienced? In future tasks, what can you do to eliminate the negative feelings and build on the positive ones?”

  • Suggestion 2: Ask the participants to selet 4 images: 2 images representing the best aspects of their team performance and 2 images representing the worst aspects.
Allow them time to each explain why they have selected those cards and then ask similar questions to those above:
    • “What do we need to do to improve the poorest aspects of our team performance?”
    • “How can we achieve the maximum benefit from the strengths we have in the team?”
